My knowledge and experience

When I left university, I went into Petrol Station management before switching to accountancy when I started a family.

I worked for as an in-house Accounts and Payroll Officer, dealing with the day-to-day accounts and payroll, liaising closely with the Chartered Accountants.

I moved into practice to expand my knowledge, running a local office, dealing with the bookkeeping and payroll needs of a variety of local businesses.  I also supervised the training of an Accounts student, producing various process manuals.

Specialising in Payroll Management, I ran the payroll team for a national healthcare provider, processing weekly payroll for about 3000 staff.  Redundancy led to a move back into accounting and bookkeeping services.

I made the decision in April 2014 to start my own bookkeeping practice.

I found the ICB who were incredibly supportive in getting me through the seven exams needed to be qualified enough to practice.  Their exams are tough, reputedly so, because they want the best bookkeepers.

After just one year of studying, I became an Associate Member of Institute of Certified Bookkeepers; Busby's Bookkeeping Services was granted its first Practice Licence shortly thereafter.

Having now gained my Self Assessment Tax qualification and Diploma of Payroll Management, as well as Member status of ICB, I can offer a more comprehensive service, from bookkeeping and payroll, to self-assessment and Auto-Enrolment.

And the ICB continues to support me through ongoing training and great networks with other bookkeepers who we see as our friends… never our competition.

My practice has been nominated for five and subsequently shortlisted for four Luca awards: Small Practice of the Year in 2019, 2022 and 2024

Payroll Practitioner of the Year in 2024.

I received a Highly Commended Award in 2019 as it was felt that Busby's deserved recognition despite not winning the Luca.

Down Tor Stone Row and Circle

Outside of my work life, I make the most of the beautiful area in which I live.

Before I start work, I like to take the family dog out for a good yomp over Dartmoor, exploring it's tors and it's amazing stone rows and circles.  If I can combine this with a bit of woodland or a river walk, even better.

Reconnecting with the world at this level is so important to our mental health and, when there's 368m2 of Dartmoor's beauty and wilderness on the doorstep just waiting to be discovered, it would be wrong not to.

And to relax my mind after a productive day, I turn to crochet.  Not the usual scarves and gloves (thank goodness, says my family) but I love to create small plushies, keyrings, etc.

It all started when my daughter needed items to sell on a charity stall and she deligated the task of making them to me!

Now I have quite the repetoire from hedghogs to dogs, squirrels to owls and allsorts in between.

Obviously, I had to make a bee holding a poppy.
